Imagine that you have just finished dinner and it is time to clean-up. You’ve got piles of plates, baking dishes, frying pans and all of them need to be scrubbed and rinsed before they can go into the dishwasher. You turn on the faucet for hot water and wait … nothing … no hot water. After several minutes of waiting you decide to try your bathroom sink and see if it has hot water – nothing. Now, not only do you have a kitchen counter full of dishes that need to be cleaned. But, you can’t take a shower or wash laundry and you need to figure out why you don’t have hot water!

Plumbing emergencies can be disorienting and leave you not knowing what to do. Here are some tips for first steps to take:
- Contact our office immediately: Sometimes a plumbing emergency involves water spraying everywhere and flooding your floor and countertops, these scenarios are quite obviously an emergency. Other times the situation might be more subtle and you question whether it truly is an emergency. Our advice is to always call us no matter if the situation is obvious or not!
- Turn off the main water source: Your plumbing system is sophisticated, but not necessary intelligent. In other words, it doesn’t know that a pipe is broken and to stop pumping water to that location. Instead, it will be sending water through all of the pipes, including the broken ones, until you turn off the main water supply. This valve is typically located outside of your home and controls the water supply to your entire house.
- Turn off the water supply to the affected fixture: Plumbing fixtures can suffer from a variety of plumbing issues. When you have a plumbing issue with one fixture, it is usually a sign that only that particular fixture needs to have the water supply shut off and not the entire house. Each fixture has shut off valves located near the back and can easily be turned on and off.
